Sarasvati and Soma

When water becomes awareness

In the Rig Veda, Sarasvati and Soma belong to the same symbolic field.
They are distinct, yet deeply connected.

Both express a single principle: that which flows transforms.

1. Soma, the drink of clarity

Soma is not a mere ritual substance.
It is described as a living drink, opening awareness.

It brings:

  • clear vision
  • inner momentum
  • direct perception of reality

Soma does not create illusion.
It reveals.

2. Sarasvati as the fluid matrix of Soma

Sarasvati is water itself.
Soma is always:

  • pressed
  • filtered
  • mixed
  • set into motion

Without water, Soma cannot exist.

Sarasvati represents the essential condition for Soma:
fluidity, purity, and openness.

3. Drinking Soma means entering the flow

The hymns suggest that drinking Soma is not ingestion.
It is entering a current, like stepping into a river.

Sarasvati is that current.
Soma brings awareness to it.

Separated, both lose meaning:

  • Soma without Sarasvati becomes mechanical
  • Sarasvati without Soma remains latent

4. Inspired speech and Soma

After Soma, speech arises.
Hymns flow naturally.

This is no coincidence.
Soma frees speech,
Sarasvati shapes it.

Inspired speech is not constructed.
It flows.

5. A civilization built on circulation

In the Rig Veda, Soma is never confined to a rigid elite.
It circulates, like water.

Together, Sarasvati and Soma define a simple model:

  • consciousness must circulate
  • speech must remain fluid
  • illumination must not be seized

When circulation stops, society hardens.

Conclusion

Sarasvati and Soma are not abstractions.
They describe a real dynamic of human consciousness.

When water flows,
when Soma illuminates,
when speech remains alive,
the ego dissolves.

And balance becomes possible.
