In the hymns of the Rig Veda , Savitri (or Sāvitr̥i) is a particular form of the Sun, not visible in the sky, but felt as an inner force. It is not just a physical star, but a living, awakening power, which breathes energy, clarity, and movement into the entire universe.
Savitri is most active at the pivotal moment between night and day. He is the Sun of dawn, the one who inspires beings to rise, to act, to think. He animates the breath, thoughts, and words. He is the inner thrust that inspires, that sets things in motion. In Vedic hymns, we pray to him to awaken our intelligence and enlighten our consciousness.
It is to this deity that one of the most famous and sacred mantras of the Rig Veda is addressed : the Gayatri mantra . This mantra comes from hymn 3.62.10:
tat savitur vareṇyaṃ
bhargo devasya dhīmahi
dhiyo yo naḥ pracodayāt
Simple translation:
May we obtain that luminous splendor, so desired, of the god Savitri who stimulates our thought.
This mantra is recited every morning by Brahmins, yogis, and seekers of light. It is not addressed to a distant god, but to that inner light that can guide the mind toward clarity. It is a prayer to awaken right thinking, refine intuition, and open the path to awareness.
Sāvitrī is also a name given to the feminine form of the mantra, or sometimes to a goddess associated with this inspiring light. She embodies the sacred word, the vibration that flows through the world and can uplift those who listen to it in silence.
Savitri is therefore not just a cosmic symbol. She is a subtle presence that acts within the being, pushing us to emerge from mental darkness and enter a state of clarity and presence. Through her energy, the world awakens, and humankind too can awaken.
