The hymns of the Rig Veda were rarely recited or sung in full. Shlokas (verses) were used singly or in pairs throughout the sacrifice. In the case of the Agnistoma, which lasted five days, these isolated shlokas were repeated for long periods.
We will study and decipher some of them taken at random, which will allow us to better understand the purpose of the sacrifice, and possibly, teach us a little history of this civilization.
1 – O Indra, remain firm, O Generous One, enjoy this soma juice, as powerful as you. Awaken us and make us grow. May Savitri protect us with the gods, after hearing us. We choose unlimited Happiness.
2 – Come, at the right time, to take a portion for Vayu, so that he may drink the clear soma, roaring. He has attained the brownish juice to drink it. We choose unlimited Happiness.
3 – May the god Savitri stimulate the sacrificer, the one who presses the drink, to attain the Goal, so that we may worship the gods honestly. We choose unlimited Happiness.
Commentary: In these few shlokas, the rishi addresses Indra and invites him to drink soma. (nectar of immortality based on psilocybin) This soma is very powerful, especially since they took it 3 times a day, which made for an 18-hour experience. The rishi says that Indra, who represents strength and spiritual energy, is as powerful as soma. He awakens the one who consumes it and makes him grow spiritually. Savitri is the sun (in its awakening aspect), which symbolizes Light, protects the drinker. By doing so, he experiences unlimited happiness in accordance with the definition of this moment: Sat – Cit -Ananda.
He asks Indra to take a portion (a bowl), for Vâyu (the deified wind which represents the internal breath) they drink together the soma which gives them unlimited happiness (the Brahman).
The rishi asks the god Savitri to stimulate him to reach the Goal (Brahman) to worship the other gods, always in unlimited happiness.
