Enlightenment through the destruction of the ego: a Vedic teaching

In the ancient wisdom of the Vedas, enlightenment is often described as the ultimate state of liberation and oneness with the cosmos. This path to deep knowledge of self and the divine is based on a central concept: the destruction of the ego. According to the Vedic texts, it is by transcending attachment to self and dissolving the barriers of the ego that one achieves a life of harmony and peace.

Soma: A Tool to Transcend the Ego

The Rig Veda, humanity’s oldest sacred text, repeatedly mentions a divine drink called Soma. Presented as a sacred nectar allowing one to commune with the gods, Soma is described as a plant without leaves, flowers or seeds, a detail that intrigues modern researchers. These descriptions evoke entheogenic mushrooms, notably Psilocybe cubensis, known for their ability to induce altered states of consciousness.

Tryptamine, present in these mushrooms, acts on the brain in a similar way to DMT, which is naturally produced by the pineal gland. These substances open the doors of perception, temporarily abolishing the illusion of the individual self and allowing one to directly experience universal unity. It is in this state that the ego, this « false master », fades away, giving way to an expanded and luminous understanding.

Peace and Harmony: A Visible Legacy in the Indus Civilization

The ruins of the cities of the Seven Rivers Civilization (Sapta Sindhu), such as Mohenjo-daro, Harappa or Rakhigarhi, reveal a remarkably peaceful society. There are no traces of military fortifications, nor evidence of wars or conquests. This absence of violence, slavery and weaponry testifies to a social organization based on principles of cooperation and non-aggression.

This pacifism, unique for the time, can be seen as a direct consequence of the destruction of the ego, taught and facilitated by Vedic spiritual practices, notably the use of Soma. A society where the individual is no longer a prisoner of his own ego is a society where collective harmony becomes possible.

Vedic Teaching: Beyond the Material

In the Vedas, enlightenment is a goal beyond material wealth or fleeting pleasures. It requires inner discipline and the abandonment of illusions related to « I » and « mine. » Vedic hymns encourage meditation, sacrifice (yajña), and communion with the forces of nature, reinforcing this idea of universal connection.

Soma, as a catalyst, was not just a beverage; it symbolized a key that opened doors to a larger consciousness. Its consumption, accompanied by rituals and sacred intentions, allowed one to understand that the ego is a transitory construct, to be overcome in order to access an eternal truth.

Conclusion: a society without ego, a timeless model

The 7 Rivers civilization offers a fascinating model of a society where the absence of ego fosters peace and prosperity. Soma, as a spiritual tool, plays an essential role in this quest.

This legacy, thousands of years old, reminds us that true enlightenment lies not in accumulation or power, but in the dissolution of the ego and oneness with the universe. A timeless lesson, as valid today as it was in Vedic times.
