The Inscriptions and Writing of the Oxus and 7 Rivers Civilizations

The Oxus and 7 Rivers civilizations are two ancient cultures that lived in Central and South Asia. They flourished between 3500 and 1900 BCE. Although they are close geographically, they developed distinct scripts and inscriptions.

The Oxus Civilization

The Oxus civilization, also known as the Bactria-Margiana culture, was located primarily in what is now Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, and Uzbekistan. Inscriptions from this civilization are rare. Archaeologists have found objects with symbols carved into them, but these symbols do not appear to form a complete script. It is thought that these symbols may have had a religious or ritual function.

The Indus Civilization

The civilization of the 7 Rivers, or Harappa, was located in the Indus and Sarasvati valleys, which crosses present-day Pakistan and northwest India. This civilization is famous for its large, well-planned cities and advanced sanitation systems. The inhabitants of the Indus left many inscriptions, mainly on stone seals.

These inscriptions consist of pictograms and signs, but until now no one has managed to completely decipher them. We therefore do not know exactly what these inscriptions say, but we think that they could be linked to commerce, administration or religious practices.

Comparison of the Two Civilizations

Although the Oxus and Indus civilizations lived at the same time, their approach to writing and inscriptions was different. The Oxus civilization used simpler and less frequent symbols, while that of the 7 Rivers developed a more complex, but still mysterious, system.

In conclusion, these two civilizations left important traces of their culture through their inscriptions, although the mystery surrounding their writing remains largely unsolved.
